5 minute grammar

Hi!
Today we’re going to have a look at idioms.

Idioms are set phrases in English which are not usually recognizable from single words or meanings – they have to be understood by the whole expression. One of the most commonly known, but not that commonly used funnily enough, is
it’s raining cats and dogs
As you can see from the sentence – even if you understand the words, without the understanding of the meaning in full, it still won’t be understood.
I recommend when learning idioms-  try to find out the meaning of the idiom as soon as you can, then try to learn them by grouping them together somehow, I would recommend by topic – for example idioms for money:
Money talks
A fool and his money are soon parted
Money is the root of all evil
Money doesn't grow on trees
….
If you understand the idioms individually, it will make it easier to remember them later on by grouping them under a theme.
Unfortunately, as you can see, there is no quick fix, you do have to learn them, but at least this way will prove a little easier to remember…
Bye for now!

MIKE
