Otaku is a Japanese term for "nerd" or "geek" and generally holds a negative meaning... Although this is true, in the past decades this term became world wide spread and nowadays some people even brag about themselves being one! The second meaning for otaku is people with obsessive interests, especially in "anime and manga". Both "anime and manga" are Japanese terms. "Manga" is a term used for Japanese comics while "anime" is a term used to describe Japanese animation productions.
Some examples of anime might be known to you from your childhood... Examples such as Pokemon, Sailor Moon, Candy Candy and many other that we tend to call "the Chinese-ones". Examples of more modern anime that are still seen on TV are Aang The Last Air bender similarly The Legend Of Korra and also some anime that the present children are obsessive with such as Monsuno, Beyblade, Pichi Pichi Pitch, Bakugan and many many others...
So next time you sit to watch your favourite "Chinese Cartoon" (never use this terms in front of an otaku!) ask yourself: "Am I starting being an Otaku?"
