The huge disaster of Thera

                              Santorini

Santorini is a result of a history of eruptions ,which caused changes in the island's shape and size. Before every eruption there was a little island next to santorini which was called Profitis Ilias.During all the ages many  eruptions took place but most of them were negligible. The volcanic activity created a cycle called caldera 400.000 years ago.

During the bronze ages there were several eruptions but the most important had occured in 1613 b.C. The 2nd largest explosion in the history rose tidal waves, which swept the shores of the nearby islands and northern Crete. The explosion was 48-64 hours long and 60km3 of ash was ejected.the eruption sank the 1/4 of the island breaking it in 3 pieces : Santorini , Therasia and Aspronisi. The destruction was complete.
In 46 b.C. the volcano emerged again from the depths of the caldera creating from the start volcanic islands. In the last 150 years the area of Nea Kameni has tripled.

In January of 1950 the most recent eruption shocked Santorini and lasted 22 days.On january 10th the acid was blown due to the explosion. Also tephra was spewed1000 meters in the air and lava was dropped within a range of 850 meters all around. The explosions continued until February 2nd.

Scientists are waiting for the next eruption and they're ready for the studies as they have placed an organ which is customized to notify the scientists when the temperature is raising so they know that a possible earthquake is coming.
